Tete Montoliu Trio • Catalonian Fire

Vicente Montoliu Massana, was born in Barcelona Spain in 1933.The son of a Barcelona symphony woodwinds player, he was born sightless. When he was seven, there were two events that shaped his life: he learned to read music in Braille and he heard recordings by Duke Ellington. Montoliu studied classical piano at the Barcelona Conservatory, and was known as a local piano sensation.

His early interest in jazz was further stimulated when the great saxophonist Don Byas lived for a time in the Montoliu home. By age 17, Montoliu was leading jam sessions at a Barcelona theater. He made his international debut when he was invited on a European tour by Lionel Hampton in 1955, and in 1956 he recorded with the band. The possessor of astonishing technique, Montoliu exhibited warmth, deep feeling, and humor in his playing. In the 1960s and '70s, he worked with an array of leading jazzmen including Roland Kirk, Dexter Gordon, Kenny Dorham, Archie Shepp, and Ben Webster. By the early 1960's, he was recognized as one of Europe's top jazz musicians. He traveled around Europe, and landed the house pianist job at the Café Montmartre in Copenhagen. Upon his return to Spain he began to perform and record prolifically mainly for the Steeplechase label. He garnered quite a reputation as a reliable jazz virtuoso, and his services were repeatedly called upon by visiting American jazzmen.

He recorded abundantly alone and with trios, almost always for European companies. “Lunch in L.A.,” his only album for an American label, found him in 1979 in great form playing solo on standards and originals. He created a prodigious body of work and amassed an impressive catalog of close to sixty records as a leader alone. He was also featured pianist on hundreds of European dates with scores of musicians. Montoliu was also quite comfortable covering classic Spanish boleros, the songs of Jobim, and exploring Brazilian and Cuban inspired rhythms, where he accompanied various female vocalists in these diverse genres.

He did a series of trio sessions based around the “Catalonian Nights” theme, which were recorded with Albert “Tootie” Heath and John Heard. These are available as Volumes I II and III, from Steeplechase. One of his last great recordings was a 1990 trio date with bassist George Mraz and drummer Lewis Nash, “The Man from Barcelona.” The session draws from standards and timeless jazz compositions, all played with Montoliu's inventive touch. He throws quite a few twists into his complex setting of “Stella by Starlight,” shows off his chops in an intense workout of “Autumn Leaves,” and pulls out all stops with the furious rendition of “A Night in Tunisia.” The pianist's lyrical side is showcased in the blues and ballads offered. The album was released a few years after his death, which was 1997.

Tete Montoliu personified the atypical jazz pianist, being from a diverse culture, he was capable to not only express musically his own heritage, but became proficient in playing his individual interpretations of American jazz in its swing to bop variations.

Jean-Luc Ponty • Sunday Walk

Biography
Jean-Luc Ponty is a pioneer and undispute master of violin in the arena of jazz and rock. He is widely regarded as an innovator who has applied his unique visionary spin that has expanded the vocabulary of modern music. Ponty was born in a family of classical musicians on September 29, 1942 in Avranches, France. His father taught violin, his mother taught piano. At sixteen, he was admitted to the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, graduating two years later with the institution's highest award, Premier Prix. In turn, he was immediately hired by one of the major symphony orchestras, Concerts Lamoureux, where he played for three years. While still a member of the orchestra in Paris, Ponty picked up a side gig playing clarinet (which his father had taught him) for a college jazz band that regularly performed at local parties. It proved a life-changing jumping-off point. A growing interest in the jazz sounds of Miles Davis and John Coltrane compelled him to take up the tenor saxophone. Fueled by an all-encompassing creative passion, Jean-Luc soon felt the need to express his jazz voice through his main instrument, the violin. So it was that Ponty found himself leading a dual musical life: rehearsing and performing with the orchestra while also playing jazz until 3 AM at clubs throughout Paris. The demands of this doomed schedule eventually brought him to a crossroads. "Naturally, I had to make a choice, so I took a chance with jazz", says Jean-Luc. At first, the violin proved to be a handicap; few at the time viewed the instrument as having a legitimate place in the modern jazz vocabulary. With a powerful sound that eschewed vibrato, Jean-Luc distinguished himself with be-bop era phrasings and a punchy style influenced more by horn players than by anything previously tried on the violin; nobody had heard anything quite like it before. Critics said then that he was the first jazz violinist to be as exciting as a saxophonist. Ponty's notoriety grew with remarkable leaps and by 1964, at age 22, he released his debut solo album for Philips, Jazz Long Playing. A 1966 live album called Violin Summit united Ponty on stage in Basel, Switzerland with such notable string talents as Svend Asmussen, Stéphane Grappelli and Stuff Smith. In 1967, John Lewis of The Modern Jazz Quartet invited Ponty to perform at the Monterey Jazz Festival. Jean-Luc's first-ever American appearance garnered thunderous applause and led to a U.S.

Through the late-60s and early 70s, Ponty achieved mounting critical praise and popularity across Europe. In turn, the violinist soon found his signature talents in demand by top recording artists the world over. In 1969, Frank Zappa composed the music for Jean-Luc’s solo album King Kong (Blue Note). In 1972, Elton John invited Ponty to contribute to his Honky Chateau #1 hit album. Within a year - at the urging of Zappa who wanted him to join his band the Mothers of Invention - Ponty emigrated with his wife and two young daughters to America and made his home in Los Angeles. He continued to work on a variety of projects - including a pair of John McLaughlin/Mahavishnu Orchestra albums/tours (Apocalypse, Visions of the Emerald Beyond). In the meantime he became a prolific composer, signed on as a solo artist with Atlantic Records in early 1975, released his first album Upon The Wings Of Music that same year and started touring with his own band. For the next decade, Jean-Luc toured the world repeatedly and recorded 12 consecutive albums which all reached the top 5 on the Billboard jazz charts and sold millions of copies. Early Atlantic recordings, such as 1976's Aurora and Imaginary Voyage, firmly established him as a figurehead in America's growing jazz-rock movement. He went on to crack the top 40 in 1977 with the Enigmatic Ocean album and again in 1978 with Cosmic Messenger. In 1984, a revolutionary video featuring time lapse images was produced by Louis Schwarzberg for Individual Choice. Along with Herbie Hancock, Ponty became one of the first jazz musicians to have a music video. Besides recording and touring with his own group, Ponty also performed some of his compositions with the New Music Ensemble of Pittsburgh, the Radio City Orchestra in New York, as well as with symphony orchestras in Montreal, Toronto, Oklahoma City and Tokyo. In the late-80s, he recorded a pair of albums, The Gift of Time and Storytelling for Columbia. On 1991's Epic-released Tchokola, Ponty combined his acoustic and electric violins, for the first time, with the powerful polyrhythmic sounds of West Africa. He also performed for two months in the U.S. and Canada with a cast of African expatriates he had encountered on the Paris music scene. In 1993, Ponty returned to Atlantic in impressive fashion with No Absolute Time. Working with American and African musicians, Jean-Luc expanded on the explorations of Tchokola with a moving and soulful result. "There is a whole scene in Paris of top-notch African musicians", he says. "I was very curious and wanted to educate myself in these rhythms, which were totally new to my ears. In 1995, Ponty joined guitarist Al Di Meola and bassist Stanley Clarke to record an acoustic album under the name The Rite of Strings. This all-star trio also undertook a six-month tour of North America, South America, and Europe that earned them intercontinental critical praise. Ponty regrouped his American band in 1996 for live performances following the release of a double CD anthology of Ponty's productions for Atlantic Records entitled Le Voyage. One of these concerts was recorded in Detroit, Michigan, in front of 6000 fans. It was released in February 1997 by Atlantic Records under the title Live at Chene Park. In 1997, Jean-Luc Ponty put back together his group of Western and African musicians pursuing this new fusion that he started in 1991. Together they toured for 3 years from the Hawaiian Islands to Poland and triumphed in North America as well as in Europe. Ponty also performed a highly acclaimed duet with bassist Miroslav Vitous in December 99. In January 2000, he participated to Lalo Schifrin's recording with a big band, Esperanto. In June 2001, Ponty performed duets with Vadim Repin, the young Russian star of classical violin and also with American jazz violinist Regina Carter at the Film Music Festival in Poland. A universal approach to music which has always been the essence of Ponty's motivation and work. In August 2001, Jean-Luc Ponty released his new studio CD Life Enigma on his own label (J.L.P. Productions, Inc.), a return to his concept from the 70s with a very modern production. Ponty played all the instruments on some tracks and was joined by his band members for superb performances on other tracks: William Lecomte (keyboards), Guy Nsangué Akwa (bass), Thierry Arpino (drums) and Moustapha Cissé (percussion). Ponty gave an extremely successful concert with his band in his native town of Avranches, in the French province of Normandie, on September 21, 2001. He was also honored during a special ceremony at City Hall, finally gaining recognition from his compatriots. He then embarked on a very successful concert tour in the USA in October-November 2001, receiving strong and loyal support from his fans despite the uncertainty that followed the September 11 terrorist attacks. In May 2001, Ponty recorded a memorable concert with the same musicians at the superb opera house in Dresden, Germany. This recording was released in July 2002 on a CD entitled Live at Semper Opera (J.L.P. Productions, Inc. – Navarre Distribution in North America and Le Chant du Monde-Harmonia Mundi in Europe). In January 2003, Jean-Luc toured in India for the first time, 7 shows in 6 major cities for the Global Music Festival organized by Indian violinist L. Subramaniam. Jean-luc brought along his bassist Guy Nsangué Akwa, both performed with Subramaniam’s band and drummer Billy Cobham who was also a guest star on that tour. Ponty also did an extensive tour across the U.S.A. in the Fall. In 2004, the PAL version of Jean-Luc Ponty’s first DVD In Concert was released in Germany (Pirate Records 202756-9), in France-Italy-Spain (Le Chant du Monde/Hamonia Mundi 974 1195). The NTSC version was also released in 2004 in North America (J.L.P. Productions, Inc./Navarre Distribution JLP 004). It contains a live concert with his band filmed in Warsaw in 1999, mixed in 5.1 plus bonus materials, such as an 11-minute film of travels and backstage scenes. In Concert is also available on CD in some countries. Jean Luc Ponty & His Group toured in 2004 in France, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Lithuania and India, for their first concert as a whole band in Bombay. Ponty also did a reunion tour with Stanley Clarke and Al Di Meola as the Rite of Strings from June to October 2004 in the U.S.A. and Canada. In 2005, Ponty has been touring with a new project called Trio! in collaboration with Stanley Clarke on double bass and Bela Fleck on banjo. In 2006 Ponty reunited “Jean Luc Ponty & His Band” and toured in the USA, Chile, Venezuela, Western and Eastern Europe, Russia, The Middle East and India; they also recorded a new studio album called The Atacama Experience with guitarists Allan Holdsworth and Philip Catherine appearing on a few tracks. This new CD has been released in June 2007 by Koch Records in North America and by Universal in Europe, and received 4-stars in the US jazz magazine Down Beat as well as raving reviews internationally. Most critics say that it is one his best since Enigmatic Ocean. Concert tours followed the release of this album in the USA, Canada and Europe in 2007 and 2008. At the end of 2008 “Jean Luc Ponty & His Band” became a quartet without percussion, a return to the ‘Ponty sound’ of the 70s-80s in a jazzier version. 2009 started with a concert at the prestigious LA FENICE theatre in Venice, Italy, followed by more concerts overseas and a first appearance of JLP’s band in Mexico. In September Ponty performed as a guest of the Chick Corea - Stanley Clarke - Lenny White Trio along with Chaka Khan for a special evening at the Hollywood Bowl, with Stevie Wonder showing up by surprise for a jam at the end. Then in November JLP & His Band embarked on U.S. tour that started in San Diego, California and ended in New York City. In 2010 Ponty is scheduled to perform with his band in the Caribbean, Europe and Russia and also did several concerts in Europe as a duet with pianist German pianist Wolfgang Dauner. 2011 has been a great year for JLP. He received the "Jazz Legend Award" from the Mayor in Cork, Ireland after his performance with his band at the Guinness Jazz Festival. Altogether JLP performed 88 concerts in 2011, 75 of which with "Return To Forever IV" (36 in the USA - 21 in Europe - 6 in Australia - 6 in Japan - 2 in South Korea - 1 in Israel). The November tour in South America with the "Atlantic Years Band" was also a big highlight, a reunion of Jean Luc's American band members from the 80s. 2012 started with a concert in Sochi, Russia where world famous classical violist and conductor Yuri Bashmet remitted the Grand Prix of the Sochi Arts Festival to Jean Luc after his performance with his band. Then in April Jean-Luc gave a very special concert celebrating his 50-year career at Theatre du Chatelet in Paris, for which he performed his music with the Concerts Pasdeloup symphony orchestra and also with guests artists Stanley Clarke, Bireli Lagrene, Daniel Humair and Eddy Louiss. In January 2013 JLP participated to a gala in honor of Yuri Bashmet’s birthday with the State Symphony Orchestra New Russia in Moscow. Then in April Jean Luc Ponty & His Band performed at the Jazz Festival in Cape Town, South Africa. Also in 20013 Herbie Hancock invited him to perform in Istanbul at "International Jazz Day" for UNESCO with a cast of jazz stars such as Wayne Shorter, John McLaughlin and George Duke to name a few. Ponty also founded a new quartet with his daughter, pianist-singer-composer Clara Ponty for performances in France and Germany. Ponty also performed his music with the 89 musicians of the Novosibirsk Philharmonic Orchestra for the Siberian Christmas Festival. In 2014 Ponty has recorded an album as an acoustic trio with Stanley Clarke on double bass and Gypsy-French guitarist Bireli Lagrene, to be released on Impulse/Universal in the Fall 2015. Jean-Luc recently formed the Anderson Ponty Band with Jon Anderson, cofounder and lead singer of British progressive rock band YES, a CD and DVD will be released in 2015 followed by a world concert tour.

Rob Franken • Fender Rhodes

1941 born Rob Franken was one of the key figures of all European organ players in the 1960s and 1970s. He was the first European to master the Fender Rhodes electric piano and among the first to handle the Hammond B3 organ. Although he was mostly obsessed with the Fender Rhodes throughout the late 1960s, the Hammond was the instrument he was best remembered for. Rob Franken started his career with the folk duo Esther & Abi Ofarim, then he moved to play with Klaus Weiss Trio in the mid 1960s. Soon after he formed his legendary own small combo, The Rob Franken Organization. The Organization released two albums - ‘Pon my soul in 1967 and Ob-la-di ob-la-da in 1969. He also played as a pianist of Toots Thielemans and a permanent organist / keyboard played for Peter Herbolzheimer Rhythm Combination and Brass. During his relatively short career, Franken played in over 400 records and was a very much liked person among session musicians. His sudden and unexpected death due to an internal hemorrhage at the age of 42 in 1983 ended his glorious career - only three days after his last recording session with the Rhythm Combination and Brass.

Niels Pedersen & Philip Catherine • Art Of The Duo

Review by Rick Anderson
This summit meeting between Niels-Henning Ørsted Pederson, one of the most widely recorded and universally respected bassists in jazz history, and guitarist Philip Catherine, an almost equally revered guitarist and perhaps the foremost keeper of Django Reinhardt's gypsy-jazz flame in his generation, should have been a much more exciting one that it turns out to be. Recorded live in a jazz club in Lausanne, Switzerland, it is unfortunately a fairly tame affair, its highlights hidden behind poor production. (The recording level is so low that you have to crank your stereo up to a painful level just to hear in detail what is going on.) Interestingly, some of the best moments on this album are the bass solos, among them Pederson's dancing choruses on "Stella by Starlight" and on his own knotty composition "The Puzzle". Catherine's playing sounds conservative, almost tentative, and the proceedings rarely catch fire. Notable exceptions include the duo's interplay on "The Puzzle" and on a blazing rendition of the Jerome Kern standard "All the Things You Are". It's by no means a waste of time, but Art of the Duo is also far from the best introduction to the work of either of these fine musicians.

All the Things You Are".

Stuff Smith • Swingin' Stuff

Review by Scott Yanow
Recorded five days after a similar performance at the Montmartre in Copenhagen by the same personnel (violinist Stuff Smith, pianist Kenny Drew, bassist Niels Pedersen and drummer Alex Riel), Stuff and his quartet are once again heard in top form. Four of the nine songs are repeated from the earlier date, but unfortunately, the music on this LP is currently out of print. On such tunes as "Bugle Blues," "Mack the Knife," "One O'Clock Jump" and "Take the 'A' Train," Stuff Smith shows that he was as hard-swinging an improviser as any horn player and that at the age of 55 he had not run out of gas yet.

Artist Biography
In the era of early jazz and swing, the violin was often an instrument that carried a hint of an old-fashioned sound--a suggestion of classical music, of the high-society dance orchestra, of the gypsy café music of Europe. But Stuff Smith, considered one of the most important jazz violinists of his time, made music that told a different story: Smith's violin was raucous, rhythmically daring, and bluesy, looking toward the future, not the past. Like most great jazz players, Smith pushed the envelope in his playing, and later in his career he adapted with little difficulty to the new musical language of bebop. Smith also sang and was the composer of several jazz standards.

Hezekiah Leroy Gordon Smith was born in Portsmouth, Ohio, on August 14, 1909, but grew up in Cleveland. His father taught him to play the violin and encouraged him to study classical music. Smith took some music lessons but switched to jazz after hearing Louis Armstrong play the trumpet; Armstrong influenced Smith's own style at a fundamental level. Although he had received a scholarship to study at Johnson C. Smith University, Smith opted for a musical life instead. At age 15 he joined a touring minstrel show, the Aunt Jemima Revue.

In 1926 Smith joined the Dallas-based band of Alphonso Trent; this was one of the so-called “territory” bands that grew from the improvisatory and bluesy roots of jazz rather than moving toward the more composed and arranged style of the eastern seaboard. He stayed with Trent for four years, moving briefly to the band of Ferdinand “Jelly Roll” Morton but returning after becoming frustrated that his violin could not be heard over the dense sound of Morton's group. In 1930 Smith formed his own band in Buffalo, New York.

During his Buffalo years Smith cast one eye on New York, and he got there in late 1935 and 1936 after he composed a scat-like novelty song called “I'se a Muggin'” (the words seem to have no specific meaning). The song caught on, and musician-impresario Dick Stabile booked Smith and his band, which now included drummer “Cozy” Cole, into the Onyx Club on 52nd Street. Rechristened Stuff Smith and His Onyx Club Boys, the band was a successful fixture of the New York scene for several years. The main attraction was Smith himself, attired in a worn-out top hat and sometimes sporting a parrot on his shoulder. Smith and his band also recorded several sides for the Vocalion label in 1936. “I'se a Muggin'” became a moderate hit, but another recording of that year turned out to have longer-lasting resonances--”You'se a Viper,” was covered by vocalist “Fats” Waller in 1943 and enjoyed renewed popularity in the counterculture of the ‘60s and ‘70s.

In musical terms, Smith's Onyx Club years were historically significant; he pioneered the use of the amplified violin, and he developed a bluesy, speech-inflected style that was quite distinct from the European-influenced approaches of Swing Era violinists Joe Venuti, Stephane Grappelli, and Eddie South.

In 1938 Smith appeared in the film ‘Swing Street,’ taking a hiatus from live performing. That took the momentum out of his New York career, and he dissolved his band after a series of disagreements with players and other industry figures. Smith bounced back with a trio that performed in New York (sometimes at the Onyx) and Chicago in the 1940s, and he briefly took over Fats Waller's band after Waller's death in 1943. A series of trio recordings was made in 1943 and 1944, but by the late 1940s Smith's career seemed to be in decline. In the 1950s, to make things worse, Smith suffered from health problems brought on by years of heavy drinking.

Smith was still much admired by his fellow musicians, and he moved to California and continued to perform on what was said to be a centuries-old Guarneri violin. Among his fans was big-time jazz producer Norman Granz, who teamed Smith with bebop trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie and pianist Oscar Peterson for a recording on the Verve label in 1957. It was a measure of the originality of Smith's style that his playing fit as well with this new generation of players as it had with the swing bands of the 1930s. Smith made several albums for Verve and continued to record until shortly before his death.

Touring widely in the 1960s, Smith, like so many other jazz musicians, found that European audiences were especially appreciative of his music. He settled in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1965 and made several recordings in Europe. Smith fell seriously ill on tour in Paris. Doctors placed him on the critical list; but Smith recovered and continued to perform. He died in Munich, Germany, on September 25, 1967, and was remembered, as “the cat that took the apron-strings off the fiddle.”

Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen Trio • To A Brother

Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen (27 May 1946 – 19 April 2005) was a Danish jazz bassist known for his impressive technique and an approach that could be considered an extension of the innovative work of Scott LaFaro. He was born in Osted near Roskilde, on the Danish island of Zealand.

The "great Dane with the never-ending name" was known as "NHØP" among many jazz fans. In Denmark he was most often simply talked about as "Niels-Henning" and certainly never "Pedersen", a name shared by almost 4% of the Danish population..

As a child, NHØP played piano. As a teenager, he started learning to play contrabass and at the age of 14, he began his professional jazz career in Jazzhus Montmartre in Copenhagen. At 17 he turned down an offer to join the Count Basie orchestra.

During the 1960s, NHØP played with several important American jazzmen who were touring in Denmark, including Albert Ayler, Bill Evans, Brew Moore, Bud Powell, Count Basie, Dexter Gordon, Dizzy Gillespie, Jackie McLean, Roland Kirk, Oscar Peterson, Sonny Rollins, and the vocalist Ella Fitzgerald.

In the 1970s he worked in a duo with pianist Kenny Drew, and began making occasional appearances with the Oscar Peterson Trio throughout Europe and North America. Together, they have recorded over 50 albums.

He has also worked with Stéphane Grappelli and recorded extensively as a leader. His most known songs are My little Anna, Jaywalkin and The Puzzle. Besides jazz, he also was an interpreter of Danish folk poetry and songs. Besides many other awards, he was also awarded the Nordic Council Music Prize in 1991.

Together with his friend Ole Koch Hansen he toured Denmark with the theme "Danske toner" comprising old Danish folk songs.

NHØP died in Copenhagen, Denmark, of heart failure, at the age of 58. User-contributed text is available under the Creative Commons By-SA License and may also be available under the GNU FDL.

Sus canciones más conocidas son My little Anna, Jaywalkin y The Puzzle.

A number of Storyville Records' iconic jazz and blues albums are now  available in a new series of remastered high quality vinyl releases. Featuring some of the best artists from the vast Storyville catalogue, the “Storyville Vinyl Remasters” series presents great music on deluxe vinyl.

Each release is limited edition, pressed onto 180 gram virgin vinyl with the original covers and sleeve notes preserved. Updated notes have been added to the inner sleeves and a free download of the album is included. The audio has been remastered specifically for vinyl to secure the best sound that these great releases deserve.

Bud Powell was a jazz pianist of rare talent, perhaps unique in his ability to inject vocal inflections into his improvisational playing. He reached a peak by the late 1940s although sadly by the 1950s he seemed to be succumbing to the mental illness that had plagued him all his life. Unexpectedly his career had a sporadic revival after he moved to France in 1959. Cared for by a friend, Bud Powell still proved capable of giving performances occasionally as brilliantly fluent as his finest from the 1940s. One of these performances were immortalized on this recording from Jazzhus Montmartre in 1962.

Sahib Shihab • Sentiments

Review by Ken Dryden
Like many Americans who opt to live and work in Europe, the recorded legacy of multi-reed player Sahib Shihab tends to be overlooked by fans in his native land. Sentiments pairs recordings he made for two separate albums between 1965 and 1971. On the 1971 session, he's accompanied by fellow expatriate Kenny Drew, bassist Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen, and drummer Jimmy Hopps. Most of the compositions are by the leader, starting with the exotic blend of hard bop and African rhythm, featuring Shihab's dancing soprano sax and Pedersen's bass solo. Drew switches to organ and Pedersen makes a relatively rare appearance on electric bass on the funky "Sentiments." The leader switches to baritone sax for Drew's exuberant ballad "Extase." The 1965 sessions feature Shihab as a guest with the Danish Radio Jazz Group, playing six of his originals. "Di-Da" is a catchy hard bop tune in which one note is repeatedly echoed by members of the group, though the pattern disappears as he launches his powerful baritone sax. The moody "Tenth Lament" and the perky "Harvey's Tune" are also highlights, with Shihab switching to flute for the latter piece. The supporting cast has a number of top European musicians, including Niels Pedersen, pianist Bent Axen, trumpeters Palle Mikkelborg and Allan Botschinsky, and drummer Alex Riel.

Dexter Gordon • Jazz At Highschool

Review by Ken Dryden
Dexter Gordon is represented by a large discography, though the late '60s are little documented. The discovery of this previously unissued radio broadcast from 1969 is a real treasure, as the tenor saxophonist is in superb form, accompanied by some of his favorite musicians: pianist Kenny Drew, bassist Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen, and drummer Albert "Tootie" Heath. He revisits "Soy Califa," an original written for a Blue Note session earlier in the decade; this hard bop vehicle opens the show with a flourish. Gordon and Drew share the spotlight in a sensitive treatment of "The Shadow of Your Smile." His loping blues "Society Red" features Pedersen's incredible solo work, while "The Blues Up and Down" (co-written by fellow tenor saxophonists Sonny Stitt and Gene Ammons) works perfectly well for Gordon without a sparring partner on his instrument. Beautifully recorded with excellent balance between the musicians and an attentive, respectful audience, it should be considered a mandatory purchase for hard bop fans.

Dexter Gordon • One Flight Up

Review
by Michael G. Nastos
When he expatriated to Scandinavia just before this session in Paris was recorded, Dexter Gordon said he was liberated in many ways, as a jazz musician and as a human being. This is reflected in the lengthy track on this album, a testament to that newly found freedom, addressing the restrictions the American music scene placed on artists to do the two- to three-minute hit. With the nearly 18-minute "Tanya" and the 11-minute "Coppin' the Haven," Gordon and his quintet, featuring trumpeter Donald Byrd, were able to jam at length with no thought of being edited, and they fully prolong their instrumental remarks in a way few other musicians -- jazz or otherwise -- would allow themselves. Yes, it would be difficult to hear these tracks on the radio, but the tradeoff was a listening experience for their fans that would also showcase a rare commodity in the lexicon of their style of post-bop mainstream jazz -- consistency. The simple, sweet, and lightly swinging "Tanya" has become a classic song, and it is a staple in most saxophonists' diets, even though the supportive chord structures from pianist Kenny Drew and Byrd's up-front brass are more attractive or noticeable than Gordon's bluesy tenor. Memorable for many reasons, Drew's brilliant composition "Coppin' the Haven" is textbook modern jazz, a modal minor-key delight as Byrd again dominates with a shining, gliding melody tacked on to an easy swing that exemplifies the song form for jazz in its best sense. Gordon steps up apart from the trumpeter on the great ballad "Darn That Dream," and is at his best, wringing every regretful emotion out of his horn as only he can. The CD version contains the bonus track "Kong Neptune" sans Byrd, a good swinger that cops from no other influences, merging the mythical strengths of the two creatures in its title via Gordon's muscular, lithe, and athletic on-land and at-sea horn. At around 47 substantive minutes of music, One Flight Up stands as a testament to Dexter Gordon's viability as a bandleader and teammate, while his individualism is somewhat sublimated. It's a good listen to digest all the way through, especially if you are as patient as the performers, who have a lot to say.}

Reseña
por Michael G. Nastos
Cuando se expatrió a Escandinavia justo antes de que se grabara esta sesión en París, Dexter Gordon dijo que se había liberado en muchos sentidos, como músico de jazz y como ser humano. Esto se refleja en el largo tema de este álbum, testimonio de esa libertad recién encontrada, que aborda las restricciones que la escena musical estadounidense imponía a los artistas para hacer el hit de dos o tres minutos. Con "Tanya", de casi 18 minutos, y "Coppin' the Haven", de 11 minutos, Gordon y su quinteto, en el que destaca el trompetista Donald Byrd, pudieron improvisar sin pensar en ser editados, y prolongaron al máximo sus comentarios instrumentales de una forma que pocos músicos, de jazz o no, se permitirían. Sí, sería difícil escuchar estos temas en la radio, pero la compensación era una experiencia auditiva para sus fans que también mostraría un bien raro en el léxico de su estilo de jazz post-bop mainstream: la consistencia. La sencilla, dulce y ligeramente oscilante "Tanya" se ha convertido en una canción clásica, y es un elemento básico en la dieta de la mayoría de los saxofonistas, a pesar de que las estructuras de acordes de apoyo del pianista Kenny Drew y los metales de Byrd son más atractivos o notables que el tenor bluesy de Gordon. Memorable por muchas razones, la brillante composición de Drew "Coppin' the Haven" es jazz moderno de manual, una delicia modal en clave menor en la que Byrd domina de nuevo con una melodía brillante y deslizante unida a un swing fácil que ejemplifica la forma de canción para el jazz en su mejor sentido. Gordon se separa del trompetista en la gran balada "Darn That Dream", y está en su mejor momento, exprimiendo cada emoción lamentosa de su trompa como sólo él puede hacerlo. La versión en CD contiene el tema extra "Kong Neptune" sin Byrd, un buen swinger que no bebe de otras influencias, fusionando las fuerzas míticas de las dos criaturas de su título a través de la musculosa, ágil y atlética trompa de Gordon en tierra y mar. Con unos 47 sustanciosos minutos de música, One Flight Up se erige como un testamento de la viabilidad de Dexter Gordon como líder de banda y compañero de equipo, mientras su individualismo queda algo sublimado. Es una buena escucha para digerir hasta el final, especialmente si se es tan paciente como los intérpretes, que tienen mucho que decir.}
